Virginia Rutter

WHEN Effective media programs work well when they have a time frame that meets the needs of all the stake holders: you as the expert, institutions supporting you, and media outlets. Whether you are doing your own personal promotion or working for an organization you'll learn the elements of a good media plan.

WRITING AND PUBLISHING OPINION PIECES
Stephanie Coontz
An op-ed is a guest essay published in a newspaper's opinion section. It is a great way of demonstrating the relevance of your research or professional experience to public policy debates, helping people think about social problems in new ways, or publicizing an issue, organization, book, or cause. In this seminar we will discuss how to figure out the take-away points you want to make, how to present them in ways that will increase the chance that your op ed will be accepted, and the principles of writing an effective op ed.
Stephanie Coontz has published op eds in every major paper in the United States, and also helped dozens of fellow researchers revise their own op ed drafts and get them accepted by newspaper editors. For examples of her work, go to www.stephaniecoontz.com
